How To Measure Helmet Size
It is absolutely critical that when you are choosing a helmet that you get one that fits you properly. If not it will not provide you with the protection that you need while you skating or skiing at the high velocity. In order to do this you have to know how to measure your helmet size.
The first thing that you have to do in order to measure your helmet size is to figure out the circumference of your head, almost all helmet size charts are based on this. It is a fairly straightforward matter to measure your head, you simply have to wrap a tape measure around it. That being said you will find that things go a lot easier if you have somebody to help you. If not you may find it a bit tricky to keep track of the spot where the tape actually meets.
The most important thing when you are measuring the size of your head is to make sure that you measure it in the right place. Your head is of course not uniformly round so you need to get the right measurement. This should be done by placing the tape measure just above your eyebrows and wrapping it around your head. One thing that you are going to have to watch out for is to make sure that the tape stays level the whole way around, this is another reason that you will find that things are easier if you have somebody to help you.
Once you know how big your head is it is a simple matter to look up on the charts which size helmet you need. The only thing to be aware of here is that each manufacturer has different helmet sizes so you have to make sure that you use their charts, don’t assume that because you wear one size with one maker that the same size with another will fit you. All helmet makers have their charts available online so finding one should not present a problem.
Once you have determined the size of the helmet that you need you are going to want to try it on. In theory if you have measured your head correctly the helmet should fit properly, in practice this does not always work out. When you try on a helmet make sure that it does not move in any direction when you move your head. If the helmet slides back and forth or from side to side it is too big for you.
One other thing to check when you are sizing helmets is to make sure that the chin strap fits properly. It should be tight but not too tight. That means that it should hold the helmet in place but it should not make it hard for you to breathe. You do however want to be careful to make sure that you are not relying on the chin strap to keep the helmet on, the helmet should stay firmly in place even without the strap. The chin strap is there to make sure that the helmet stays on when you fall.
