Helmet Sizes Encyclopedia
It is well known that a helmet is important for protecting your head when you are performing a variety of activities. Because of the serious nature of head injuries this is the most important piece of protective equipment that you will wear. That means that you have to choose the the proper helmet, in particular you have to get one that fits correctly. In order to do this you are going to have to be familiar with how helmet sizes work.
The reason that wearing a helmet that fits properly is that it can not do its job if it does not fit on your head in the proper way. The main danger is that if the helmet is too loose it will come off in an accident. There is a lot of force involved in most accidents, if your helmet is not tightly secured to your head it will come off, at that point it is not doing you any good. At the same time you do not want to have a helmet that is too tight as this will be uncomfortable to wear, the likely result being that you will not wear it.
In addition to ensuring that your helmet remains securely on your head you also want to make certain it fits so that it provides protection in the areas where it is supposed to. It is fairly common for people to wear helmets that sit too far back on their heads, usually because this is more comfortable. The problem is that if the helmet sits too far back it will not provide protection for your forehead. Conversely a helmet that sits too far forward will not adequately protect the back of your head. A properly fitting helmet should sit squarely on top of your head.
Obviously having a properly fitting helmet it important, the problem is that sometimes choosing the right one can be a bit of a challenge. The main difficulty is that each manufacturer uses its own system for determining helmet sizes. The result is that you cannot assume that because you need one size from one manufacturer that the same size from a different manufacturer will also fit you properly. You need to make sure that you know what size you are for each individual helmet makers sizes.
Fortunately the helmet makers do provide a way that you can fairly easily determine what size of helmet you need, they offer a sizing chart. This is almost always based on the circumference of your head. Of course you will need to measure your head to use these charts but that not should not represent too much of a difficulty. If you already know your hat size many of the charts will also include that so that you can determine the proper size easily. The key is to make sure that you use the chart for the particular company that you are buying from.
